Manufacturing employment and women’s agency: Evidence from Lesotho 2004–2014

This paper examines the impact of manufacturing employment on women’s health and decision-making power within households in Lesotho. Under US African Growth Opportunity Act 2000, women ready-made garment (RMG) factories new industrial zones greatly increased. Subsequent shocks to international demand for textile products created by phase-out Multi-Fibre Agreement 2008 Financial Crisis temporarily reduced well-paid RMG work opportunities. Women residing closer were particularly affected. These changes are exploited identification causal impacts. Employment sector is found substantially increase say decisions about allocation household resources own health.

We use a unique rich newly built data set for German manufacturing enterprises to investigate the relationship between product diversification and the stability of sales and employment. We find that contrary to portfolio theoretic considerations more diversified firms exhibit a higher variability of sales and employment.
